Lessons

Beginning and Intermediate Students

What can I expect?

If you have never taken a voice lesson, it can be a little intimidating getting started!

I strive to create a warm, inviting environment. I am a believer in humor, hard-work, and positive mindset. I encourage my students through positive feedback and press them to do a little more each time they get up to sing. Our best improvement comes when we are willing to take a risk and challenge ourselves. My goal is to make a safe space where you feel like you can take these risks!

We usually start out a lesson with a brief hello and then right into vocal exercises. As you get the hang of it, I recommend coming to your lesson already warmed up. During this time we will work on specific, targeted vocal exercises to help improve a certain area or technique. Examples might include breathing, intonation, resonance, muscular tension, vocal health, vocal agility, vocal range, legato and lyricism, articulation, and vocal color choices, to name a few.

After our focused vocal work we often move into singing repertoire (songs.) Songs are tools to build our voices and help them to fulfill their fullest potential. I will help you to select songs which are appropriate for your vocal ability. I have taught a wide range of students, including classical, pop, and musical theater students. We will find the songs that fit your goals and your voice!

The Advanced Student

My focused area of expertise is with the advanced performer. In my daily work, I help students who are preparing to enter their respective musical performing careers, including classical performance, singer-songwriting, and musical theater. Advanced lessons are for those who are ready to seriously dig in to their voice with detail and rigor. Lessons will be more demanding and focused in order to find true vocal refinement. I can help you prepare for an audition or an upcoming role. I am also ideal for students taking a gap year between degree programs or who are emerging from their degree program into the world of professional music making.

Teaching Philosophy

My primary goal as a teacher is to get you singing your best in the most healthful way possible. I am first and foremost a classical singer and voice pedagogue and believe in the evidence voice science gives us to inform how the voice functions the best. All singers, regardless of genre, will learn a classical, voice-science oriented, foundation which can then be applied to your individual genre. Your vocal health and longevity is a major priority to me!
